Before You Ride

As a personal watercraft user, you are in command of a boat. Attitude and awareness are key factors when you operate any boat, since most boating accidents result from operator error. Also, when riding with a passenger make sure they know what to do if they fall off or the proper actions for any other circumstance that could occur on the water.

It is very important that you read and understand your owners' manual before you operate your PWC. It is the best source of information about the operating characteristics of your PWC.

Lines And Knots

Ropes are an important piece of boating equipment. They will last longer and work better if they are stored dry, clean, coiled and free of kinks. There will be times when a PWC operator will need to secure equipment or tie the craft to a dock, buoy, anchor or piling. Using the appropriate knots will secure the PWC or any other boat.


Square Knot - Typically, this knot is used to tie a bundle together or secure equipment.


Figure 8 Bend - Looping two ropes together in a figure 8, this knot is used to join two ropes with the same diameter.


Bowline Knot - This knot should be used whenever an eye or loop is needed.


Anchor Bend Knot - It's used to fasten a line to a ring or anchor.


Cleating Hitch - Using a figure 8 with one loop reverse, this docking knot goes around a cleat.


Clove Hitch - Two loops with an end tucked under, this knot is used to secure a line to a piling or like object. This knot should only be used for temporary mooring.
