Noise

Remember that noise carries farther on water. It affects people on shore and in boats. Many people get on the water or go to the beach to relax. The constant sound of a boat motor can be exceedingly bothersome. For PWCs it's advisable to move around, don't stay in one area until you wear out your welcome. Early morning and late afternoon are times when people particularly enjoy peace and quiet. Stay away from residential and camping areas and places where people usually go for solitude. Excessive noise from a personal watercraft is one of the fastest ways to make you and other PWC users unpopular with others. Vary your operating area continuously throughout your ride. Do not modify your engine or exhaust if the result is more noise. Noise can be as much a pollutant to the environment as fuel, smoke, and litter.

Some states have limits on the allowable noise levels for PWC and other boats. Noise from your boat can be measured on a decibel meter. If your machine is beyond the allowable range you may be fined or have your boating day ended.
